Virgin Islands Housing Authority’s YouthBuild U.S. Virgin Islands (YBUSVI) Program is a 48 week federally funded multi-strategy, youth leadership and community development program that offers opportunities for, out of school or unskilled young people ages 16-24. Since 2003, YBUSVI Program has served over 300 young people and assisted with placing them in jobs, entering post secondary as well as the military services.
The program operates Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The program is conducted at two instructional sites territorially; Oswald Harris Court Housing Community in St. Thomas and Aureo Diaz Heights Housing Community in St. Croix. The following are key components of the YBUSVI Program:

HANDS ON CONSTRUCTION TRAINING
Participants work as part of Virgin Islands Housing Authority’s Vacant Unit Rehabilitation Team to gain real world applications and experience in the construction industry. Instructors supervise and assist participants utilizing building and construction techniques learned in the lab during classroom training. Participants become familiarized with safely using basic hand tools, power tools in the carpentry, electrical, masonry and plumbing trades.
An on-site Counselor/Job Developer to address behavioral and personal issues as well as help participants in achieving career goals.
LIFE SKILLS TRAINING
Students build sound work habits as well as budgeting, decision making and time management skills. They develop career plans and prepare for job interviews.
Core competencies such as setting and achieving personal goals, managing anger effectively and personal budgeting are offered. Establishment of a Policy Committee comprised of participants elected by their peers to provide input on program policies, staff hiring and improvement in program delivery and performance.
JOB PLACEMENT/POST SECONDARY EDUCATION
Participants receive assistance with finding jobs at the completion of the program. Assistance is also provided to participants who are interested in advancing their education by taking SAT Prep, Financial Aid and College Admission Workshops.
