Specialized Programs
Special programs, funded by HUD, are those that have specific criteria for implementation, subject to a grant agreement executed by HUD and the Executive Director of the local Public Housing Agency.
Youthbuild
The Virgin Islands Housing Authority’s YouthBuild Program U.S. Virgin Islands is a federally funded, multi-strategy leadership youth development program. Since 2003, the YouthBuild U.S. Virgin Islands Program has served over 300 unemployed, out- of school, and unskilled young people ages 16-24 who are residing in low to very low income households.
YouthBuild USVI is a leadership development program providing opportunities for education, career exploration, workforce readiness and life skills, to transform the lives of young people with the capacity to become community minded, highly functioning and contributing members of the local, regional and global societies.
The success of the YouthBuild Program is dependent on our ability to create an environment in which unskilled young people are motivated to complete their high school education, learn job skills in construction, develop leadership skills, and resolve personal issues to be productive an contributing citizens in our community. Moreover, the program with the support of our key partners and stakeholders, assist participants in preparing for various career pathways to include, military service, post-secondary institution and employment.
The program prepares participants for entrance into the job market by exploring concept based curriculum in small classroom settings with individualized teaching, counseling and supports. The Program offers:
· Academic remedial courses
· GED preparation
· College Preparation
· Construction Training
· Computer Literacy Training
· Job Training/Placement
· Community Service
· Counseling
· Mentoring
· Stipend Payments
